Also, I completely missed this Trick or Dream business. I don't know how one of Japan's most famous idol acts could release a song in complete secrecy, but they did it.

I like it, too...how can you not like a melody straight out of Mother Russia turned into a J-pop song? Last time I remember this blend turning out so well was back when Koha-chan was doing Balalaika.

It really is surprisingly good! I didn't bother listening to it for the first couple of days after it was released because I thought it was just some commercial jingle, but then eventually I did, and wow! It's ridiculously catchy.

I listened this song again and still do not understand what you heard the Russian here, although I have lived in Russia for more than 30 years. I think this is a very very Japanese song.

There is more Soviet in the song of Koha-chan, yes, the red star, intonations in the chorus as in the songs of the army choirs, well, the Russian musical instrument in the lyrics

I agree that there's a lot more in "Balalaika" (obviously :) ) but I think I know what is meant.
I'm no music expert, so can't explain it technically but the song sometimes has (in lack of a better term) klezmer like moments

It really is surprisingly good! I didn't bother listening to it for the first couple of days after it was released because I thought it was just some commercial jingle, but then eventually I did, and wow! It's ridiculously catchy.

That isn't to say that some of those "commercial jingle" aren't very good/catchy themselves. Personally, I really like Bokura no century (MUCH more than Santa-san), Sora no Curtain, Koyoi Live no Moto de, Naichaisou Fuyu, plus Hagane no Ishi AND Hitotsubu no Egao de are some of my favorite MCZ tracks overall.

Oh, when I said commercial jingle I didn't mean that it was commercial as in a song made to be catchy to sell, but as in that it was actually a jingle used in a tv commercial.

Calling it Russian was probably a little too specific...I was aiming for the general area. Upon further consideration, it hasa Slavic/Gypsy melody. Matt's klezmer comparison is a good one too (it's basically the same thing).

If I had to pick a specific song it reminds me of, I'd go with this (it's from a really good movie):

That's good to hear. I guess they just didn't have time to practice as many songs, this month, so they let the guests do most of the singing.

I guess this also has to do with the FNS like show they're trying to give, which I'm not a big fan of to be honest. To me it's the least interesting and fun christmas folk mura they've done so far. For the past few episodes I also wish the girls had played more their instruments but of course I understand they don't have the time necessary to practice much.

The summer live was way too ambitious, and they messed up a lot because of that. This live was not ambitious enough...they didn't take any chances, they just kept it basic, and didn't really do anything they haven't done before (except the Momoka solo, that was great). So sure, there weren't many mistakes, but it also wasn't the kind of show that would get fans excited.

Honestly, I'd much rather attend a show like the one this summer, where they're trying to do way too much and fail a lot, than this one. But I get why: most of the work is probably going into the New Year's show.

Regarding the quality I wasn't only referring to Momoclo but the guests as well
It was basic in structure but they don't have to re-invent the wheel every time
As I said it won't make it into my Top 10 but it wasn't disappointing either
