Exile actually got both of their tactics banned by Oricon, as it were. First, they gave away concert tickets (like full concert tickets that someone would otherwise have to pay $50+ for, not like a free mini-live or lottery-based release event) with their single, that's the one that hit a million. Then, they tried doing music cards, which are the bane of every international fan's existence, but they were essentially a card with a member picture that had a code for a song download. They pushed these really hard because each card counted the same as one CD, but the cards came in about 20 or so different varieties and were half to a third the price of a typical Japanese single so it was easier to convince casuals to buy multiple of those instead of just one CD. Neither of these things count towards Oricon-recognized sales anymore.
With Arashi in particular, they don't do much tokuten. Other Johnny's groups do, and they go all out, like with "hug events," where you can get a hug from a Johnny's boy instead of just a handshake event, but the main selling power for Johnny's and their biggest acts is that they are the most dominant talent with most exposure in Japan, and also they just don't have their music available anywhere else but in CD form. They have long resisted digital sales and streaming, only barely testing the waters with smaller groups, but when they have fan club numbers reportedly in the millions (Arashi's is around 2 million, last I heard), they don't have to do too much to push people to buy more than a copy or two. -
So why be concerned about Oricon figures then when there's so many different marketing and sales strategies around...

Everyone raises a ruckus around sales and what's good and what's bad and what they expect, but ultimately the numbers don't actually mean anything and they don't change anything about the group. It's why I've never been concerned with anything Oricon, and why we should all just move on from these discussions. A #1 is nice and everyone is happy about it, but it's random chance, not the result of particularly hard work or particularly good music, and doing "poorly" is so relative and based on so many things, some of which have nothing to do with the group itself; it's better just to listen to the music and watch the girls and enjoy the thing you like that they produce. That's all I really have to say on that matter. -

So if I buy the box set, I will surely get a ticket for 2 shot event for one member of my choosing?
But I think grabbing that number spot 1 will ensure them high chance of more TV appearance, deals with CM companies, magazines, radio invitation, garnering interest from new fans and guests at event. Not that Ebichu never had any of these but more of these couldn't hurt. -

(Some of my favorite groups don't even make the bottom of the charts, but that doesn't make them any less important or valuable to me.)

Many people are always asking about a new system that will show "real" sales (withouth gimmicks) like Soundscan used to do. Mainly to get idols out of the way and try to see what the japanese general public is really interested in, not just fandom power.
I remember something my economics teacher told us: "you can have a bar which sells drinks at 5$ and has 1,000 customers or you can have a bar which sells drinks at 100$ and have 50 customers. At the end of the day they make the same"
I don't think relying on having some hardcore fans who would spend a lot on you is a bad thing, but it'll sure be trickier when they decide to stop spending money because they represent a bigger part of your income.
On the other hand, even if you're really popular with the general public and sell a lot only one copy per person it doesn't mean it's going to hold. People are fickle and a lot might buy one album and leave you on the next.
What I think it's best is find a balance, don't make 20 versions of the single with different covers, but it's ok to add some extras for the hardcore fans who want it all. I'm happy as long as it allows them to keep making music I like. -
Oricon is very important for all idols and should not be neglected.
They have a great influence to the entertainment world.
If a Oricon be thrown into the mire, it is a Oricon still.
Nobody will hold launch events if they don't have influence.
